HOW TO START YOUR OWN FM RADIO STATION - MYTHS OF RADIO
On
an almost daily basis, we encounter people reciting some well trodden
radio myths. One area in which the great number of myths are perpetuated,
is in the selection all of your studio, and also studio equipment.
Particularly so for small-scale radio stations, where people may not
be entirely sure how to start your own FM radio station. Many people have
the impression that a studio is full with a great amount of equipment,
with a huge number of blinking lights to match. While certainly there
is some essential equipment that absolutely must be in the studio, it
by no means needs to be completely filled up.
MYTH 1: that you need a large mixing desk. The popular assumption of
a radio mixing desk, is a mixer that is exceptionally large, and that
has perhaps 30 channels and faders. Aside from being rather pricey, these
units are simply quite unnecessary. The reality is that a regular radio
studio will neither have need for 30 channels on the mixing desk. When
you think about it, there may be perhaps five microphones connected to
the mixing desk, obviously the computer system, a couple of CD players,
perhaps a record player, as well as your phone line input. All up, we
have perhaps 12 or 15 channels that are needed on the mixing desk, certainly
no need for 30 or so. So immediately, you can save money on your mixing
desk purchase when you start your own FM radio station, by opting for
a smaller scale unit, that will do the job just as well is the larger
units. And indeed, you will also find you have a great deal more room
to work with your desktop, as all the room won't be taken up by the mixer.
